%20aligns%20their%20generation%20confidence%20with%20the%20actual%20likelihood%20of%20answer%20correctness%2C%20which%20can%20inform%20users%20about%20LMs'%20reliability%20and%20mitigate%20hallucinated%20content.%20However%2C%20prior%20calibration%20methods%2C%20such%20as%20self-consistency-based%20and%20logit-based%20approaches%2C%20are%20either%20limited%20in%20inference-time%20efficiency%20or%20fall%20short%20of%20providing%20informative%20signals.%20Moreover%2C%20simply%20filtering%20out%20low-confidence%20responses%20reduces%20the%20LM's%20helpfulness%20when%20the%20answers%20are%20correct.%20Therefore%2C%20effectively%20using%20calibration%20techniques%20to%20enhance%20an%20LM's%20factuality%20remains%20an%20unsolved%20challenge.%20In%20this%20paper%2C%20we%20first%20propose%20an%20activation-based%20calibration%20method%2C%20ActCab%2C%20which%20trains%20a%20linear%20layer%20on%20top%20of%20the%20LM's%20last-layer%20activations%20that%20can%20better%20capture%20the%20representations%20of%20knowledge.%20Built%20on%20top%20of%20ActCab%2C%20we%20further%20propose%20CoDec%2C%20a%20confidence-guided%20decoding%20strategy%20to%20elicit%20truthful%20answers%20with%20high%20confidence%20from%20LMs.%20By%20evaluating%20on%20five%20popular%20QA%20benchmarks%2C%20ActCab%20achieves%20superior%20calibration%20performance%20than%20all%20competitive%20baselines%2C%20e.g.%2C%20by%20reducing%20the%20average%20expected%20calibration%20error%20(ECE)%20score%20by%20up%20to%2039%25.%20Further%20experiments%20on%20CoDec%20show%20consistent%20improvements%20in%20several%20LMs'%20factuality%20on%20challenging%20QA%20datasets%2C%20such%20as%20TruthfulQA%2C%20highlighting%20the%20value%20of%20confidence%20signals%20in%20enhancing%20factuality.)
